Are there any harmless aberrants?

Hypothetically, there could totally be an Aberrant with neutral or positive effects. Which means that, statistically, it’s almost certainly happened at some point. Why people don’t know about them, I’ll leave up to your deduction.

From my notes, there exists a low-powered, Scourge-type Aberrant that provides the perfect cup of coffee, which is immediately and forever addicting, but doesn’t force you to drink it or anything.

There are two problem with trying to find a harmless Aberrant. First, magic has a cost, and while Aberrants don’t have the same limitations as mortal sorcerers, that concept often still gets built in to their anomalous effect. Secondly, a break event is a horrible, traumatic event born of turmoil, pain, and desperation. It’s impossible for the person breaking to miss that fact.

I dunno, this sounds like a world-ending effect to me. Who wouldn’t go to war for the perfect cup of coffee?

Yeah. If the addiction is strong enough, the coffee could be used to enslave people. It isn’t a drug with any bad side-effects, it’s just really good coffee. It could be used to ensure loyalty.
People bringing ingredients to the aberrant so that it will keep making coffee.
A gang giving people the coffee so that they keep working for them.
A person being loyal to the coffee, not the gang, so he sides with a stronger rival gang that crushes them and takes control of the means of coffee production, and he keeps getting the coffee but under new leadership.

I suppose if hypothetically one, was intentionally training the given mage with mental ideation, indoctrination and perhaps training in divination or shamanic magic you could eventually get breaks where the goal was specifically something positive desired desperately? Of course harm and positivity are both contextual labels for equilibrial states. Medicine is poison by dosage and all that.

Still…its possible, the issue I think fundamentally would be figuring out the whole meaning and range of meanings for the concepts behind a given spell and how it could permutate without being bad. Even something like say providing energy to bacteria could lead to them overgrowing and causing die offs in the water as they suck up all the needed oxygen. Which could induce famines and all kinds of issues later. Most sapient beings dont work well with absolutes, just narrow oscillating bands.

In all seriousness, in any attempt to “create” a helpful aberrant, we’re kinda planning the obliteration of a sorcerer’s personality and likely physical body. It all but kills them.
