Do you think Sebastien actually lives in such a scary part of town, or is Damien just hyper-sensitive? Chapter discussion, thoughts, theories, and whatever else welcome. ---

Damien has no community in these regions. Sebastian even outside his form as Siobahn I assume to both have the “look” of a streetkid in some ways in his ease of movement likely helped by memorizing the city. Combined with the Undreaming Order seeming to have noted him as favored and its unlikely many would act on him. And if they did he could likely negotiate thinga down. Damien comparatively has only recently sort of grown past the bubble of his upbringing. Like his ideation of people outside the echelons of power is way more based on stereotypes I would suspect compared to like Anna. He came to a lower class zone with little “official” actors of legitimacy providing services but he wasnt in a true slum like tbe mires. The celirium idea would be interesting especially if Celerium is basically holding some the crystallized patterns of how a magical creature imprinted magic to the spirit realm. Not as much flux so easier to call on more complex spells due to the magic being in a stable conceptual space. Thus impact of purity and size on thaums, as the scope it covered could relate to whats being referenced. The core question is hoe it forms I think. Because done right in that model it seems Siobahn could design her own material with the aid of legion eventually or possibly varient celerium that has affiliation to particular concepts. Those conceptual spaces legion could make could be quite stable, so some potential for components and metamaterials. ---

Siobhan has been in many places and has finely tuned instincts for danger. Survival is her highest priority. The kids are well fed enough that they have enough energy to play and they have Raven accessories that people haven’t stolen from them. He didn’t mention that the place smelled, so it’s probably clean. He didn’t mention houses falling to ruin so I’d say that it’s probably full of working families. Damien is too sheltered and sensitive. The place is fine. I love that she comes up with a variety of out of the box hypotheses to explain the Aberrant increase. It doesn’t matter if she’s right or wrong, the scientific process is the important part. Damien is going to have to figure out how to make his boots more stylish or he’s going to get side eyed by Ana and Titus 😂 A thought - Sebastien is giving Damien lock picking supplies, but unless I’m much mistaken and our young friend surprises me, I don’t think Damien can pick locks. Possibly time for some lessons in larceny? I’ve read through the chapter twice and found no typos! ---

I think it is kind of both. I do not think the area is super dangerous, so Siobhan is right, bit also Damien does behave like and look like a prime target for mugging, pickpocketing or just straight up kidnapping, so the area actually may be dangerous for him. To me this feels like the following thing that happened to my sister. I live in not the best and not the worst part of a fairly big (2 million population) city. I don’t think it would be dangerous at all. That said my sister came to visit me (with a friend of hers). They grew up in the countriside very sheltered. A homeless person asked her, can he have her drink she literally didn’t know how to respond (you can say just no, at least around here, but I don’t think she had ever interacted with a homeless person before) and the guy drank her drink. She lived through it as a semi-violent event when we discussed it after she arrived to me. Even though any local would know it is just a genuine question, say yes, if you feel charitable, say no if you want to keep your drink and that is it. So sometimes dangerous depends on perspective. ---

I’m imagining Damien looking like that one image of Hillary Clinton walking into a small apartment Always love a Damien chapter so I’m very happy with this one. I think Sebastien must be planning for the Raven Queen to head the secret order. Her male body doesn’t really know that many people Damien doesn’t also know, and those he doesn’t don’t seem like they’d agree to join the order. Err, unless she’s planning on making Katerin and Theo her higher ups I think finding out Thaddeus was the one who attempted to mind wipe Sebastien will be an even more devastating revelation for Damien than it was for her. To him, it would seem like Professor Lacer just left his apprentice for dead. At least Siobhan knows he _thinks_ she can handle herself As for next chapter, Thaddeus is going to have a lot of questions for Sebastien. I wonder how she’s going to excuse her out of character behaviour towards him these past few weeks I have just noticed the one typo here, “can you use Harrow Hills archives to track down” - missing an apostrophe ---

Her behaviour hasn’t been out of character per se. She’s been elusive – which is totally in keeping with her Raven Queen persona. She’s been somewhat communicative in both forms and let’s not forget Sebastien doesn’t have the best track record with keeping Thaddeus up-to-date, either. Every excuse is a self accusation, if you forgive me for mangling the French translation. I can think of a few ways she could avoid involving Damien with the Undreaming Order officially, but it’s far more convenient to explain away why they were eager to help her if she just pretends (?) to be one of them. In any case, I can see things are going to get fun soon 😂 ---

It would be really ironic if Thaddeus finds out his apprentice is actually the Raven Queen because Damien somehow let it slip that he armed his own apprentice. It could be a small slip on Damien’s part that Thaddeus grill him on or outright force him to tell the truth given how protective he is of Sebastien ---

Given Damien already suspects Thaddeus of being the one to try to mind wipe Sebastien, I doubt he’d give up that information willingly, and I don’t think Thaddeus would try to compel him to speak unless he thought Sebastien was in immediate danger (or his vow rears its ugly head again). He is still a family friend after all As for the order, I personally think Sebastien would try to frame the secret order as separate to the Undreaming Order but still lead by the Raven Queen, maybe as like her secret agents ---

In _The Key to an Unknown Lock_, Damien was looking for signs that the Undreaming Order was connected to his nameless organisation, and then there’s this gem: > Damien remembered that the Raven Queen had saved Sebastien the last time he was attacked. Why couldn’t she have saved him this time, too? Only Damien _didn’t_ know this. As far as Damien was led to believe, Sebastien was saved by another member of their order. Unless Azalea was somehow conflating Damien’s and Thaddeus’ POVs, this line only makes sense if Damien believes the Raven Queen to also be a member. That, or I have completely forgotten another time Sebastien was attacked and saved. There’s also him questioning Thaddeus as to whether the Raven Queen was really as villainous as she is made out to be, and eagerly asking if he would get to meet the _leader_ when Sebastien has only ever described the higher ups as a plural collective. I’m fully expecting Sebastien to eventually reveal the Raven Queen as if it’s some massive revelation only for Damien to be like, Well, yes. Obviously. It’s not even that huge a leap from Damien’s perspective. He has received a lot of clues that Sebastien and the Raven Queen are connected, going right back to the infiltration of eagle tower. The one that worries me is Ana. I can’t see her being ok with her two friends and political investments joining the cult of an evil blood sorceress and more importantly, an enemy of the Crowns. I’m worried she will take it upon herself to try and entrap the Raven Queen in order to save her friends from their own foolishness. ---

I dunno. Ana is quite morally flexible, more so than Damien. She just took against Deidre because of her attitude rather than her illicit actions 😂 ---

It’s not about morals necessarily, but social standing. I feel like Ana is much more attached to her status as a scion of a crown family and would be against her friends being seen to be aiding the enemy. Especially Damien. Can you imagine the reputational damage to the Westbay family if it gets out? This is basically _treason_ we are talking about. ---

Oh, I dunno. I think she’s far more interested in power than status, and I think she’s confident enough in her abilities to be of use to the rebellion and earn herself a place by her own merits - as well as change things for the better. She has been stifled by the current system - she had to fight for the position that was rightfully her own, her precious sister was put in danger, her mother was belittled, and she couldn’t even invest her own money the way she wanted. No, Ana craves respect and power. I can see her as a revolutionary. She has a good heart, despite everything while also being able to be ruthless when need be. I believe in her.
