Thoughts on tanya canelo

rereading the books again and just finished A Binding of Blood and was kind of surprised to realize how disgusted I feel with Tanya.

she killed two innocent people collapsing the Verdent Stag greenhouse/warehouse.

"“Find out what her connection is to those upstarts. It is your job to bring me solutions, Canelo. If you cannot do that, I may start to regret our arrangement.” “Don’t underestimate me,” she said. He chuckled. “You’ll have your assignment change next term if you can provide results. And a recommendation from me to any Master who’s willing to hire you, when the time comes.” Tanya snorted. “When the time comes, I’ll be the one hiring people.” Without waiting for him to respond, she trudged

I’m disgusted by her self centeredness. even her concerns were only for herself facing consequences from the Raven Queen, not for anyone harmed by the University or the Morrows

“No, Tanya,” Newton said, his horror a distant thing that made his lips slow. “Shouldn’t we run?” “That will never work. We have to flip the tables. Don’t worry, it’s two against one.” She raised her hand to forestall further argument. “And I’ll call for reinforcements. Not all the Morrows were captured, and at least some of them will still be active and responsive to a flare beacon. This is what I hired you for, Newton. You’re already here, and you can’t back out now. We’ll take that person by surprise.”

she doesn’t listen to Newton or Siobhan and creates the conditions for Newton’s break

I want her to face justice, not be rewarded as Sebastian’s business manager. she seems to have no conscience and only self interest.

I get your point of view, I really do.

But take a few steps back and look at her world, look at how she’s been treated, look at when she gets rewarded

She has to act that way, it’s the only way to get anywhere in life according to those who hold power over her

Now, is she wrong? Oh 100% absolutely

But I don’t think she realizes there might be a different way until she watches the raven queen act differently then her leaders.

She’s crushed when Newton dies, she knows it’s 90% her fault (she prob thinks 100%, but short of pulling a trigger, i don’t believe in taking away some of the surrounding things that helped cause the issue)

If you watch, she’s trying to figure out how to change, how to be better, she wants some kind of redemption…

However, she also really does need some kind of protection, cause the stupid so called builders of chaos were sending her off to die or go poof every chance that they had.

You want justice, how would you feel if your boss decided that you were no longer worth supporting and was trying to get you killed?

There was no getting back into their good graces without a different protector.

Also, she cannot afford to keep going to school without them. Which term is considered complete enough to do magic out side of school?

I’m still a little confused about how terms work, cause it’s clearly different than years…

And I’m the sort of dummy who needs to look at a picture or diagram to understand stuff like that.

She’s a dangerous type to have around our girl. Lots of ambition, and a kind of ruthlessness. She’s been terrified straight (b/c RQ) but you never know if Sebastien told her to do something unethical, would she really resist? And the temptation to use things like the portal power selfishly already worries me: S. gets it and first thing starts wondering about what she could steal.

When I wrote Tanya into my fanfic, I also found one of my MCs didn’t like her very much either. I hadn’t set out for him to have much of a negative reaction, but reading closely on how she behaved in the second book, I could not find many redeeming qualities to her early in the story.
