Chapter 249 Discussion - Eunoia

This has me imagining all kinds of fun misdirection using the spells she already has.

Like:

“No, that couldn’t have been Sebastien Siverling, remember? That was the week when he was mysteriously cursed with a spark-shooting spell that was active 24 hours a day, even when he slept”
“Oh yeah! I hear that it was the High Crown, jealous of all the attention Sebastien gets, taking advantage of Lacer being gone”
“It seems like a harmless prank at first, but when you consider that it didn’t stop, it’s sort of horrifying!”

Or:

“No, that’s not the Raven Queen! The Raven Queen leaves a trail of tiny diamonds glittering in her wake wherever she goes!”

Or their oaths would force them to scour entire cities clean. We know they at very least have done the same to villages, so it doesn’t seem out of the question.

What is happening!!! Freaking OUT

So, I’ve been thinking about this.

What if she has a movement spell constantly on the go - like the one she practiced for Lacer?

What if it was little shards of glass?

What if she threw those at people who attacked her, disguised by her shadow ravens and coated in her void shadow?

Now she has shadow ravens capable of physically harming people and cutting through basic…or maybe even very advanced defences. I can’t imagine Lacer’s anti stab defences were anything plebeian.

Okay, yes, I’ve been thinking about this ever since I knew she could dual cast. But now that she can triple cast, she can do the shadow and glass while also fireballing people’s faces and no one will realise it’s 3 spells in one.

She might not necessarily need it working 24/7, but it could make her very reactive. Still, an easy access pouch of glass at her side with a circle on the side would be very viable.

Another option would be to be constantly creating diamonds from air. She could make some little trinkets from them and give them seat as gifts.

Or she could spend time brewing while studying and keeping her shadow spell going!

There’s so many options :joy:

The first one is still my personal favourite.

One that’s a little less violent and a bit more fey is if she keeps an illusion going all the time.

She’s trying to improve her illusion work and they’ve come in useful recently. It would be very useful if she learned how to add sound and smell to her illusions.

The problem is, right now she’s turning light into another kind of light. That’s simple transmutation. To be able to do all three she would need to work with different glyphs - either using sound, light and smell in one circle or finding ab more specific glyph (surely there have to be some specific to illusionists?). She also needs a better understanding of sound and scent.

But I bet if she started casting small illusions all day then her illusions would end up even more stunning and convincing than they already are.

And that might end up leading her to an idea which would make her paranoid transformation process much less time consuming.

I wonder if holding multiple spells at all times is how Myrddin managed to grow his capacity that high.

Almost certainly. The more you cast and push your limits the more you grow and the longer you live. If some thaumaturges can live to 100-200 by casting so much then surely a dual caster can live to 300-400 by doubling their effective throughout. Remember, the more capacity you have the faster you can gain more capacity and the longer you live so the more time you have to cast. It’s compounding.

Siobhan is even more extraordinary since she’s given up the need for sleep so she’s spending far more time casting than the average person. If we don’t count her shadow spell (which isn’t really pushing her since it’s a simple spell she has near perfect mastery over) then she’s spending about 10 hours a day casting. That’s a minimum 67% advantage over other students who would be casting at most 6 hours a day (the safe limit!) and quite possibly less than that.

So she’s casting a low level minimum gains spell 24/7 and then active casting more challenging spells 10/7 - compared to the maximum of other people who would be pushing to their absolute limit if they were casting challenging spells 6/7.

Anyone under these conditions would likely have explosive growth. Even removing her sleep proxy, if Myrddin was dual carrying challenging magic 6 hours a day, that’s surely more like 12 hours a day.

A thought occurred to me this morning and I don’t know where to put it so I’m dumping it here.

People kept tinfoiling Siobhan is a spirit because she has no muscle memory. I was very against this theory for various reasons, including the fact that there are plenty of people out there who are perfectly human but still have zero muscle memory (I’ve seen them play beatsaber, it’s not pretty).

But!

We know she felt like she lost her fingertips, the length of her hair etc. while she was in the spirit realm.

We also know she has memory of the same hungry sky that she was reminded of when she saw the portal to the other place.

What if walking through that other place where creatures of flesh are not supposed to roam can cause dissociation from the body?

What if she fell through as a child and the dissociation was more thorough because she was just an unprepared child? What if she started going insane from what she saw and it contributed to grandfather’s decision to take away her memories? What if she was taken over by the nightmare and his only option was to trap it within her memory?

It would explain why she seems comfortable in any body and possibly why she finds it difficult to move as instinctively as others. It would explain why someone who loved her would take such risks with her.

I have been thinking about how Lacer would resolve the “Fighting the Raven Queen => Sebastien gets Will-strain” series of events without coming to the conclusion that Siobhan = Sebastien.

My random crackpot theory is that Lacer will come to the conclusion that the Raven Queen and Sebastian made a magic pact that stipulates:

“If the Raven Queen uses magic against those closest to Sebastien, the spent Thaums will be drained directly from Sebastien’s capacity.”

This might sound crazy but hear me out.

Why would the RQ agree to the pact?
The Raven Queen has a purported interest in Sebastien (perhaps due to the Myrddin heritage?).
Perhaps she needs Sebastien to be a willing participant in what she has planned and due to her being known to strongly value personal freedom, she is ready to make a concession with this pact for him to agree.
The biggest threat to her currently is her equal Thaddeus Lacer. As an agent of the Red Guard with a strong will, there weren’t any mundane weaknesses the RQ can exploit through manipulation such as greed or a lust for political power.
That was the case until Lacer showed his hand at his “exhibition” where he directly threatened the crown to protect his protégé Sebastien (of course she would has found out about this).
Therefore the most effective tool to keep Lacer in check would be such a pact that involves Sebastien’s well-being - in other words - as hostage.

Why would Sebastien agree to the pact?
While Sebastien recognized the opportunity to further gain more knowledge and power, he isn’t completely oblivious to the danger the RQ presents and tried to negotiate such a pact that would prevent the RQ from harming anyone close to Sebastien.
Sebastien was only audacious enough to try this he has realized that the RQ has need of him as a collaborator of his own volition and most of all - alive - . Therefore he is moderately assured that she will not engage in any plots to directly harm his friends or his mentor.
While Sebastien is aware of the danger to his own life, his willingness to agree to this can also be explained by his lone-wolf trait where if he himself is dealing with an entity such as the RQ, he wants all the dangers to only reflect on himself, refusing to carry the burden with anyone (to Lacers and friends’ chagrin).

With the RQ’s capacity being limited by Sebastien, this explains the following:

  • The RQ is never dual-casting two powerful spells due to the limit in capacity.
  • The RQ excessively uses the Sebastien’s battle wand or mundane projectiles + potions which do factor into her capacity limit.
  • Her greatest feats of power come from her ‘shadow familiar’. Could the familiar have its own capacity she can draw upon?
  • The RQ is known to have extremely fine precision - being able to draw the maximum amount of effect from relatively few Thaums (which was one of the conclusions from the chapter wih the two agents, Lacer and Gera).
  • She is pleading to resolve the situation peacefully due to the harm that will befall Sebastien should she defend herself.

Why has she not informed Lacer of this pact during the fight?
The possibility of such magic even existing that links two thaumaturges capacity involving conditions based on sympathetic connections such as “friendship” and “intent” is unheard of.
It sounds like a poor attempt to get away unscathed and Lacer’s mental bindings would have never accepted this excuse.

Even though Lacer has thought himself to have come out on top, such as being “3 steps ahead” by not chasing the RQ shadow illusion and flock of birds and returning to the ledge to find her, he was defeated on all fronts because the aftermath of the battle is the following:

  • The RQ has received confirmation that her suspicions regarding the rise of break-events being true.
  • The RQ has somehow reversed his memory manipulation.
  • Sebastien is in critical condition and has almost died from will-strain.

This also fits into the RQ perverse sense of humour:
She might not see herself as responsible for Sebastien’s injury because she only created the pact between them but it was ultimately Lacer’s actions that caused Sebastien’s condition. The RQ was “only trying to escape”.

Of course the RQ has removed this pact and any of its traces after the fight against Lacer but it was essentially a cunning move to place this pact in the first place before asking her “forbidden question” since essentially she has shown capable of holding Sebastien hostage without being anywhere near him.

The only way Lacer could have won that night, was to never get involved with the RQ at all.

None of this is probably true though, so I’m really excited to see how the story will turn out!

I applaud you. This is peak crackpottery. Somehow both totally implausible and yet also logically sound. I love it.

Something about this resonates…maybe not a full will split, but the fact that he has already for many years been using his will to create a space around the vow…

I’ve been thinking about what would happen if Thaddeus figured out that Sebastien and Siobhan are the same person and realised that he has no way to actually erase her memories. It could end really badly but also he is extremely protective of Sebastien. If the vow doesn’t give him any choice but to kill her, I wonder if that conflict may help him overcome that part of it.

I would like to thank Azalea for the cliffhanger-warning. It was really thoughtful!
