Because it is creepy, and makes people distrust him!
Think about it. When you see a handsome, charismatic guy, and then he smiles a little too big too…curved, wouldn’t some part of you deep inside kind of shrivel up?
The hair on the back of your neck would be whispering into your ear, “I heard a story about the big bad wolf… Why does someone need a smile that big if they don’t eat flesh?”
And obviously, on Oliver’s part it really sucks and scars a little boy who smiles at people who then flinch away from him and don’t want to be friends any more.
Noooo! I literally just missed the cut off time😭
How unlucky.
I just woke up and it’s 3:37 where I am🥲
Thank you for the AMA though, I’ll spend the rest of the morning going through it.
Thank you so much for taking the time to do all this Azalea! Reading your answers was great!
Not expecting any follow-up, and your answer was more than adequate, but since I wrote that question in a bit of a rush, I’ll clarify a little bit. I am transgender and do already have the experience of living in a body that doesn’t fit my identity.
But, unsurprisingly, in childhood and adolescence I used to have a secret intense special interest in media where one’s gender presentation changed through some sort of magical means. Your approach to this particular trope, while it feels like good representation, is actually pretty unique in having her name shift with her appearance, but sticking with the character’s actual internal gender instead of shifting as peoples perceptions shift. Especially with phrasing like, “Sebastien looked at the other girl.” So I was mostly just wondering what lead you to it, and that was a wonderful answer.
How you’re perceived also often greatly shapes your experience of the world, often for the worse when that doesn’t line up with how you perceive yourself, so it’s also very interesting to see it combined with a character who seems almost completely immune to that by virtue of being so oblivious to how she’s perceived.
I’m so sorry to hear that. If there’s a next time, please PM me with your questions just in case, and I’ll hold off on asking them until a time you’ve specified, that way you get a chance to ask for yourself, but have a backup.
I am so on board for a “demon” sticker for my hard hat at work. Actually I will need at least three. Yes, I do have three hard hats and I must have a sticker on each.
