Chapter 282 - The Price of Power

That last line was the thing I hid in plain sight in the previous chapter, which someone did guess. Congrats!

It seems like we get a term for the facit of the will that relates to splitting: pluralism.

off the top of my head that means to have a proper will you need:

Strength

Forcefulness

Clarity

Nimbleness

Plurality

Does anyone know more? I find all the ways you can describe the Will to be so interesting!

So, seems like my gues that Aberants are spirits was confirmed here. And since magic is more attentive in the spirit realm it also seems to be related to that.

The naught blodline “in humans” resulting in plurality and therefore being more listened to by magic also opens up all kinds of posibilities. I cant wait (but have to) till we learn more about this.

I love that this magic system is so fascinating and complex that we still learn more fascinating things about it 6 books in.

Thinking some more: is freecasting just how magic is supposed to be used (as in only by asserting ones will on the world) without the training wheels that humanity has build itself over time to compensate for the lacking plurality and/or closeness to magic by blood?

Freecasting should be enough to distract Lacer. If she throws that bone as Sebastian he’ll stop mulling about his absence and overthinking his relation with the Raven Queen. Typical enough for his apprentice to try something that stupid on his own.

She’s probably not far off mastering free casting her shadow familiar at this point, but I doubt she’s close enough to more general free casting to be able to replicate that feat with any other spells just yet

I wonder if it would be possible to make a shadow spell circle in the air and cast through it with another will. Might be a decent enough approximation of general freecasting until she gets more skilled at it. Not something she would be eager to show Lacer though I imagine.

That would be a cool full circle moment given how she got her original reputation as a free-caster

Mehehehehehe! I guessed she was freecasting! Sweet victory!

cough

Anyway, errata:

And all of that and more, I can do even better than what you’ve seen, if you provide me power.

I don’t think this is wrong, necessarily, but I think it flows better if you use provide me with power. And perhaps if you remove the “And” at the beginning of the sentence.

Siobhan thought some of the childishness that had shown through in their handful of interactions.

That it had shown. Or whatever identifier that you want to use for the creature here.

It seemed the name—and someone who remembered and acknowledged their existence—were effective.

Was effective.

‘I’ve gotten strong,’ she realized.

Become strong is more correct but it’s a stylistic choice as to which you think Siobhan would use.

End of nitpicking, on to fangirling.

Did anyone else feel their heart tear out of their chest when her mother’s remnant was described as a frozen moment of time from a woman who’s forgotten her name but remembers Siobhan’s? Actual heartbreak right there.

I’m also really proud of her for realising that survival is not enough and that strength is worth some risks. Considering how she used to deliberate on this matter and obsess over security, it’s pretty huge for her to go “I’m going to deliberately do something risky, that I acknowledge is risky, for the sake of my goals”.

Oliver is right, she has become more like him. He puts his life on the line for revolution, for the hope of a better world. She’s putting hers on the line for a life where she is strong enough to protect herself, protect her mind.

I have to stop mulling over this and rereading the chapter, I have actual work to do, but it’s going to haunt me all day :joy:

It occurs to me Legion’s ability to both sense magic being cast and slip into the spirit realm at will is probably going to prove very useful in avoiding the Red Guard’s rain summoning spell. That may be relevant soon if Siobhan doesn’t find anything to satisfy Hite

Listen, I’m living for the day when Siobhan is just like “I’m bored of this” and fucking vanishes into shadow in front of the Red Guard when they think they have her locked down. It will be an absolute riot.

“Fake it until you make it”

Soon she’ll actually be able to do what people thought the Raven Queen could do.

Hm I still think its the opposite of being less of herself if she is plural. More that intrinsically the self as a separation is on some level a illusion which is much more obvious in the spirit realm due to the shared nature nature of much of the mundane. So the Brilig and one like the blood of the Naughts is better able to be themselves continuously over a wider spectra. Which may let them tap into a wider variety of symmetrical magic to do effects. Wonder if Will isn’t just a particular shape of symmetrical patterns for magic to notice. A definement based on goals rather than say material composition. It grows with repetition and depth of connectivity just like other aspects of spells.

I wonder if she coud not use the Legions dream constructs with her ravens to as it noted when it was “claudio” give them particular artificial concepts while they sleep? Such may be a good avenue of progression for her Ravens and in some sense a extension of Legion.

In a similar note its likely she could help nurture a construct to help make new spells with aberrant material like the calming one in a bit of a reversal of the previous M.O of Legion

I actually felt…a bit of I am unsure of the proper term. But like hopeful satisfaction that some things may get better when they noted her mothers frozen moment. Because that both helped note she was still there and that her effect still definitely worked. May be useful for finding or even helping her mother. Some possibility of tracking, even at risk of being tracked.

I get the feeling she will be dealing with Hite a little more directly. Given the chapter we had with the Red Guard taking bets on his demise. Then this chapter mentioned his threats. Specifically in the aspect of her wanting more power to take control over situations.

I suspect he will be getting his comeuppance soonish.

Maybe she could ambush him from the spirit realm the same way Claudio killed that shaman

Definitely not it’s been implied before that you have to learn how to free each spell individually, for instance when Oliver was thinking about how Grandmaster Kiernan can only free cast a couple of spells and those were party tricks not combat spells. So her being able to free cast the spell she’s most familiar with is a huge deal but doesn’t mean that she can just start free casting everything.

My guess is that Burg will win the bet and she’ll use Legions powers to infiltrate his room and trap him in a dream from which he can not awaken.

First time reading a chapter right as it came out and I think I picked a good one!

Something I’ve been wondering about for a while now is if the Undreaming Order becomes fervent and widespread enough, along with the Raven Queen’s overall infamy, could Siobhan use transmogrification to achieve the feats that the Raven Queen is “known” to be capable of? Of course now she no longer needs it to travel through the shadows anymore :cat_with_wry_smile:

Rather than using the piece of Newton’s Abberant to make a new spell, I wonder if Legion could assimilate it to use its anomalous effect freely. It definitely would help to reinforce the mythos that sleep is part of the Raven Queen’s domain.
