Chapter 273 Weekly Discussion - "Chirality"

I’ve always found the idea of Sundered Zones so strange and cool. Imagine living near one, seeing the pure white dome every day, and knowing that it contains an Aberrant too powerful for the Red Guard to kill. (One that you could meet, if you’re willing and able to press your hand against the barrier and give your informed consent—without anyone stopping you.)

Chapter discussions welcome!

All is explained! And, nothing. What effect is this aberrant actually promulgating? The dream of a hungry titan? The spell he’s been casting was an anchoring spell: it seems like Claudio is promulgating the effect of himself.

Well, we know that the original Claudio was the Builder of Dreams. We know he was capable of building dream gardens for people and that all his shamanry was related to dreaming - he wasn’t interested in anything else.

We know he broke while leading people through the spirit realm (which must therefore have some connection to his dream garden magic, else he wouldn’t have bothered with it), when he found the Titan Hyperiodax. We know that he was trying everything he could to anchor himself in the face of a…a presence so massive and overwhelming. We know that in desperation he even tethered himself to that presence to try and ground himself in some way.

So he broke while trying to forge connections and anchor himself.

Then you have his little spiel:

“The ability of an Aberrant—often called its anomalous effect—is always based somehow on the magic it was casting when it broke, with some variation and nuance. But there should only be one ability, even if it is versatile or has several facets. I cannot actually build gardens of hope and dream-stuff like my predecessor, but I am still capable of creating cruder concept spaces within the spirit realm. I can still connect people to the spirit realm with a binding of power—tethering them to it with an intense and unnatural directness. My ability here is a cudgel where my predecessor wielded a scalpel, but I have learned that if the emotions are strong enough, and positive enough, people are just as happy. For those who did not experience my predecessor’s magic, they cannot seem to tell the difference. This is an unusual and versatile bit of magic, and incredibly valuable in the hands of an Aberrant lucid enough to direct it, but it still conceptually fits together.”

Claudio moved to sit in front of Siobhan again, crossing his legs and leaving his back facing Mom’s frame. “The mental barrier in dreams is quite porous, which allows me to create this binding. I think of it like a tether, from myself to them, and from them to the place I choose. The longer someone is bound to a place or construct in the spirit realm, the more their mental barrier wears thin, and the other end of the tether will begin to affect them…viscerally. They act as both beacons and anchors for me, and I have found that, through very precise guidance, some of the nature—the idea—of the place they are tethered to flows back through them, to me. In this way, I can create new concepts for myself. Do you understand what that means?”

Siobhan had no real understanding of the topic, but he had seeded enough hints into his rambling monologue for her to guess. “You’re able to use more than your one, single anomalous effect?”

So, basically, if I’ve parsed this correctly - he anchors himself to others by tethering them to places in the spirit realm and then using the concepts that leak back through them when the barriers in their minds grow thin.

If you turn it on its head a bit, tethering might be his real ability - he’s tethered in an odd way to his original self and thus can cast the dream spell which in itself is a kind of tethering (but crudely). He tethered himself to Hyperiodax which is why he can walk in the spirit realm (but presumably less skilfully that the original?). He’s trying to gain more power, or rather, more powers by finding more ways to tether himself more strongly or to more beings, in an attempt to recreate what’s happened between himself and the echo of the corpse of Hyperiodax (if this is the power of just the spiritual echo…what happened in the mortal realm? Is this the source of the Black Waste? Is there another area blighted and twisted near his corpse? Or does it lie empty, his power contained entirely in the spirit realm?).

It makes me wonder about the connection between him and Siobhan in the current (future?) time. After all, when he attacked Lacer, did he use spells? I might have to reread that fight, but if he did, is he, in a way, tethered to Siobhan?! Gaining her abilities and using her to continue his life, such as it is.

The tether power being the primary anomalous effect makes so much sense! The aberrant currently in Claudio is confirmed to be the thing trapped in Siobhan given the ending of the last book and it is tethered to her:

Eventually, she saw a cube in the darkness of her eye. It was stone, and just about the size of a jail cell. There were no windows and no doors, and it looked as if it would last a millennium…or, no, as if it had already weathered a millennium. It was cracked in places, and a crimson fungus grew out from the inside, slowly widening the gaps like weeds growing up through cobblestone. A thin strand trailed outward from the stone box to her, though she could not see where it connected. There came a repetitive tapping from the inside that reminded her of a bird’s beak on stone.

She wondered if the spell would give her insight into the truth, beyond just her natural sense of the creature’s emotions. “What would happen if I do remember you?” she asked. It spoke in an even softer, stranger voice than normal. “I will fashion your dreams into a pickaxe to break out of this place with, and your memory into a guideline to lead me to freedom.”

Siobhan tilted her head to the side, breathing deeply of the smell of old resin mixed with the salty scent of sea aster, and below it all, brimstone. “And once free?” The glowing eyes curved as if smiling. “I will build a place for myself.” Siobhan swayed slightly as the world rose and fell like an ocean wave. The ringing of the bowl felt as if it might shake her soul loose from her body. “What does that even mean?” A faint sense of hunger and spite flowed from the shadow up through her feet. “I will eat your soul and wear your body like a fine garment.”

The aberrant could be getting the shadow power from the tether to Siobhan and if the other tethers have been severed I wonder if it lost the other powers permanently. That would give Siobhan a fighting chance because the aberrant-Claudio is terrifying.

I had the thought that Claudio being all skin may reflect the magic resistance of beings in setting being about the dermis, possibly due to his last actions.. The shadow aligns to energy conversion but may also have shown how the connection is two way, giving some of claudios stolen concepts to Siobahn. I still wonder if Myrrdin didnt manage a similar thing with his own imprint in the spirit world, possibly to live longer.

I suppose Claudio is a sphere (topologically). Do you think he is multiple layers of skin each contributing to magic resistance or one deep one that provides super magic resistance because of how deep it is? If he could gain or lose weight somehow that can maybe affect how much resistance he has, or maybe it’s just that spheres have more resistance than n-holed tori.

I think given Siobahns framing its layered. Which is interesting, given the thought of what Claudio may currently be like in Siobahns mind may not have such as a feature. The skin layering may directly relate to the disprate grabbing for methods to anchor himself when Claudio was the builder of dreams. Which could actually be a feature of one his held concepts, in perhaps a similar way to the others that it grasped from the Titan and humans, but instead as a mediating one that in turn helps it control what concepts it attains from its conceptual spaces
