It’s pretty well known among literary critics that Sherlock (as originally written) is pretty odd for a mystery. The reader rarely gets usable clues to actually reach a conclusion. But then, Sherlock Holmes, while being a detective, isn’t a mystery series: its an adventure series.

What makes Sherlock different from other detectives before him is that he worked from observations of physical evidence and inferences instead of working from the imagined motives, or “getting into” the criminal’s mind.
