Help me name the Cult of the Raven Queen

Is it well known she is one of the People?.. does that play in here?

The disiples are her Shadows …
Another neat word for shadow… or partial shadows… penombra…
They can be her penombra… hmm… i am needing more thought on this

Inclementia (Inclementiae plural) is unkindness in latin. I could not think of any subtle way of incorporating it otherwise.

The Lucid Flock.

I think it sits at the intersection between a friendly-sounding name, dream-related concepts, and the anti-Crown reputation the Raven Queen has, implying that her followers are the only ones “awake”.

There’s a lot of cool suggestions in here. Personally i like the sound of “The Dreaming Feathers” to fit the Raven motif and her supposed power over dreams. Leaders could then be called Pinions.

Some ideas:

  • Watchers of the Night
  • The Night Watchers
  • The Midnight Flock / Court
  • The Umbral Court
  • Children of the Midnight Eye
  • The Order of Ravens / The Order of the Raven
  • Petitioners of the Night
  • The Order of the Midnight Queen

The Midnight Flock / Court

The Midnight Court sounds awesome!

Given the precedent of the other gangs we know about being somewhat innocuously named, I would perhaps suggest “The Feather” (or “black feather”).

But there was some research a while back about key differences between Ravens and Crows - there’s obviously quite a few similarities, but they found that a count of the number of feathers in the wings. Particularly the ones on the end of the wing known as the “pinion feathers”.

Crows have 4, where Ravens have 5, so the difference between the two is a matter of a pinion…

Therefore I would like to suggest the cult adopt the somewhat whimsical name of the Pinions, because as the difference between a crow and a raven may be a matter of opinion, so too might the distinction between followers and cultists.

I really like the idea of the group in a whole just being called The Flock, or The Unkindness, use the caps! It’s important!

And them picking The Unkindness actually makes sense, it’s that backwards thing, she’s a hero to those in need and very unkind to those who cross her.

But, it’s a lot more complicated, rank could be shown by the color feather, never that rainbow black, that belongs to our queen of course, but top rank is a matte black.

But earning rank? That depends on what you do for the flock

Obviously there’s those who do that help those in need in her name, maybe they could be the feather guard or the bloodless feather, flightling, earning rank is obviously how many you have helped

You have people who are all about writing about her, or maybe what is actually going on and “those in power” are trying to cover up, feathered eye, the inked feather, the Quill, thed earn rank by peers agreeing stories are good

You have those who take care of actual Ravens, feather friend/parent/care taker, eggies, earning rank based off the number of birds they care for

Casters of any kind are prob egocentric enough to want their own group, using some kind of raven or bird component pun, obviously they earn rank by either their thaulm level or how many raven based spells they know… And it’s encouraged to share all magic and info with all, even outside of the cult, once they realize that’s her wish.

Speaking of, there is education section, clearly about studying and teaching, but again, only when they realize how important this is to her

You could make up so many groups, though her followers might limit it to 13, a play on the current power struggle.

Oh, and they obviously get special feathers for seeing and or interacting with her, but there has to be proof, and it is very frowned upon to fake it.

…and you can belong to more than one sub group, it’s about what is important to you. Most prob wouldn’t brag about it, this isn’t about them, this is about her…

And omg, her reaction if she ever realizes.

The only real question is not if Damion would join, but which groups would belong to

Though at the Damion joins, everyone just assumes she knows, but of course, true to form, she has no idea

I really would like to see the followers adopt the other name for a flock of Ravens: Conspiracy. The Ravens’ Conspiracy (or just The Conspiracy), the Twilight Conspiracy, Conspiracy of Dreamers, Dream Conspiracy, The Queen’s Conspiracy

Ravens are not a nocturnal bird, normally. So, I kind of want to see Ravens with sun and daytime imagery.

Also, making them the Queen’s Flock, and the double meaning of being in her flock is very intriguing.

Oh gods, I would edit my post, but I absolutely want to give creds, yes, this The Ravens Conspiracy

But still, the sub groups xp

I can’t wait to see what gets chosen, there is so many good ideas!!!

Siobhan is known for leadership, vengeance, capriciousness, darkness, shadows, nightmares, blood magic, bargains, free casting, sowing chaos and creating mischief.

Maybe…

Something about flight? Fate, feathers, followers and flight might work well together - I do love alliteration. Familiars, perhaps?

Vassals/disciples/servants of_____?

Someone more creative needs to build on this. In my head, they call themselves the Followers of the One True Queen. That’s just boring

Flock would be an obvious monicker because of how birds are grouped. Ravens are notorious in literature for collecting baubles. This is a “Gem” of a book, so I was thinking of something whimsical… “Flocking Lapidaries”
Because aren’t we all flocking nuts!

I do feel like the Cult isn’t really going to be made up by people who necessarily view the Raven Queen as a supreme, exalted being that they must worship, and it isn’t about being servants, or disciples, or her court. They probably wouldn’t view themselves that way

They fear her and respect her and see that she can bring them things and help her if there is some sort of equal exchange. They pray to her for assistance, but it isn’t out of faith or exaltation, it is through confidence that she can help and will be willing to for the right price.

Basically, I think that unlike Siobhan, the dealings of the Raven Queen in the people’s imaginations are, in fact, always transactional. As such, here’s my next batch of name proposals:

The Traders of Fate
Merchants of the Feather
The Dealers in Boons
The Dealers of Dreams
The Favor-seekers

Dealers of Dreams has my vote. That’s great - and it sounds like something Gilbrathans might come up with.

If we’re using the fey and queen connection, the could call themselves the Court of ravens, or just the “court” in in general, it’s less epic than some suggestions but i think it make sense.

That being said, calling yourself apart of someones court is rather brazen, so they’ll probably not fo that out of fear that it might anger her.

The name probably want to have something that mark them as subservient to the wueen rather than just a connection since they start it without her present, so “servitors, servants, supplicants or something akin to it” should probably be in the name.

Or considdering how important oaths are to fey, calling themselves the Ravrnsworn or some such work too.

I keep coming back to this, and Court of Shadows is really good. It would piss off the Crowns, make the commoners feel more important and valued, and generally cause chaos.

They could call themselves The Shadowcourt in private, and communicate using the sign of the Raven - little black raven symbols added to buildings, street signs, clothing, etc in the same way they’re already showing their support of the RQ, but also in the way that the Verdant Stag and the Nightmares use their symbols to mark territory.

There are a lot of good ideas here already, but I like Keid’s idea best, that there is something transactional about the interactions with the Raven Queen. I could not do any better than Keid’s suggestions (but I will leave my attempts below anyway), so currently my vote is for the Dealers of Dreams.

  • Shadow Swappers
  • Talon Traders
  • Black-wing Barterers
  • Fowl Dealers
  • Avian Exchangers
  • Raptor Transactors

And what others might call the followers:

  • Birdcallers
  • Birdbrains

I don’t think Latin exists in this world so “quid pro crow” probably won’t work.

Stop it. Please. I’m dying :joy::rofl:

Latin does exist, at least somewhat.

Theo says “Et tu, Brute” and Siobhan wonders if he knows what that means or is just copying what others have said.

Nice catch, I don’t know how I missed that!
